⭐ Causes of Boils
Boils are mostly caused by infection with the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. This bacteria lives on your skin without causing harm. However it gets passed into the body through tiny nicks or cuts in the skin (small cracks in the skin), or it may travel down the hair to the follicle.
Initially, the affected skin becomes red, and a lump appears. With time (4-7 days), the lump may turn white as pus starts to accumulate under the skin. This makes the boil quite painful.
The infection can spread to other parts of your body, or to other people if proper preventions are not taken.
Certain medical conditions can also expose you to a greater risk of developing boils. They are:
- Lack of good personal hygiene
- Low immunity
- Diabetes
- Lack of necessary nutrients in the body
- Anaemia or iron deficiency
- Chemical exposure due to heavy use of harsh soaps, creams or detergents which results in skin irritation
- Unfavourable weather conditions like extreme heat or humidity

- The skin around the boil becomes infected. It turns red, painful, warm, and swollen.
- More boils may appear around the original one.
- A fever may develop.

⭐ Boil Treatments
Ok. Now let us come to the point and see how can you treat boils.
If you get a boil, it is essential to regularly clean the affected area properly with a suitable antiseptic wash to prevent the infection from spreading. In case the boil bursts, you should wipe the area clean with some cotton and antiseptic wash. On drying, cover it with gauze or dressing to prevent yourself from touching it. Resist the temptation to squeeze or pierce the boil as this may result in scarring and spreading of infection to the nearby areas of your body.
If the boil seems to be growing bigger or spreading, the doctor may prescribe antibiotics. Bear in mind to complete the whole course even if the boils fade away.
You may also apply an anti-infective cream on the boils after consulting your doctor. In few cases, the doctor may suggest open the boil surgically and drain the pus out.
Note: What if your baby got a boil ?

For instant relief from pain, you can place a warm compress on the affected area and the boil for a few minutes. You can repeat this action a couple of times during the day. This may also help the pus to ooze out of the boil after which the healing can begin.
When the boil starts draining, you must wash it with an antibacterial soap until all the pus is gone and clean with rubbing alcohol. Now Apply a medicated ointment (topical antibiotic) and a bandage. You should continue to wash the infected area two to three times a day (everyday) and to use warm compresses until the wound heals.
